Prakaan Double Cask Thai Single Malt Whisky
Prakaan Double Cask Thai Single Malt Whisky
Distilled in Kamphaeng Phet in northern Thailand, Prakaan is Thailand’s first single malt whisky made by ThaiBev, the country’s most influential distiller.
Just as Masataka Taketsuru travelled to Scotland to learn how to make whisky, in doing so laying the defining groundwork of Japanese whisky, Prakaan’s makers spent time at Scotch distilleries, including Speyburn and Balblair. The aim was not to copy, but to understand whisky creation in Scotland and how it might translate to a climate very different to the Highlands.
Located in a UNESCO-listed region of deep green jungle, mineral-rich springs and air thick with humidity, Prakaan mature casks three to four metres underground, to allow the soil to act as insulation, providing a more constant temperature and humidity.
The conditions still result in rapid maturation, meaning that the whisky is ready to be bottled at a younger age than Scotland, similar to other tropically aged single malts.
Double Cask is a marriage of the two main cask styles held in Prakaan’s warehouses, American oak ex-bourbon and Spanish oak sherry casks, providing a great first experience of what’s to come with Prakaan.
